ODU is an in-state program smack in the middle
of the richest (though it's down right now) recruiting grounds in the state.
Games at ODU allow VT recruits in the 757 cheap unofficial visits to a VT game. That's a good thing.
I get it. I do. "Why ODU?" But do Liberty and/or JMU help us with recruiting the way ODU would? Norfolk State is FCS. ODU is FBS.
Now that Liberty is moving up to FBS, VT has 4 FCS games on the future schedules page. Over the next 10+ years. I don't expect that to last, but it may.
Since we joined the ACC, we've played an FCS school every year except for three. And in one of those three years, we ditched our FCS opponent to play Alabama on short notice. Which cost us a chunk of the profits from that game, I'm sure.
Ok, fine. ODU is barely an FBS school. They're still an FBS school. And a bad FBS school, in the middle of an important recruiting zone, is better than a good FCS school in the middle of a recruiting desert.
