But look at what you said:
The coaches knew/know our offense is/was garbage.... If that's the case then wouldn't you try for a touchdown when you're close? If our offense is bad, wouldn't that mean we are unlikely to get many opportunities to score? If that's the case then we need 7, not 3 because if GT is scoring TDs, then FGs aren't going to help. If we are so worried about our offense then every time we get close, we have to get 7 because who knows if/when we will get that chance again.
