I disagree
"That kid in Honduras, or Liberia -- he's probably playing in the streets (granted, 5-7 days per week), but it isn't as though he's learning fundamentals/skills from a coach, in an organized setting."
I saw kids in Italy that were in the 7 year old range that blew me away. They were juggling the ball with amazing skill, doing very technical moves on each other (ie. Maradona). I was blown away by how good they were.
Technical skills come with touches. When you grow up in poor countries that idolize soccer like we idolize football, there are several advantages. First, our kids all have iphones, tablets, XBoxs, etc. They play video games or instagram all day whereas kids in poor countries may only have a ball and spend all day outside playing soccer because they have no choice but to do only that. Secondly, our kids tend to spend free time tossing around footballs because they idolize NFL players. The kids in those other countries are idolizing soccer players and thus mimicking what they see there.
