In the last 15 years, there have been 91 wins over teams that finished top 5 (I'm using AP poll). In my opinion it's much more relevant if the team finishes there. Beating a team that is #8 at the time but finishes #1 is more impressive than beating a #4 team that finishes unranked.

Of those 91, VT has 3 wins over teams that finished top 5 (Miami, WVU, OSU). No we haven't cornered the market on top 5 wins, but that stat is so overplayed (and we actually have more than most).
