VT had to defend a lot of field every single time WVU got the ball. I'm not complaining - I'll take a game long field position advantage every time - but that's tailor made for a spread O to run a bunch of plays and rack up stats, but score relatively few points (and especially very few points per poccession).
It wasn't a coincidence that he threw his pick when the field shrunk - and with all that yardage, WVU only scored 24 points.
I think Foster learned from the Syracuse game to not worry about the yardage number between the 30s, but 1) keep the spread QB from extending too many drives with his legs (which is why we saw little blitzing) and 2) the sideline and end zone are an extra defender when it really matters.
