I'm saying that you should take in the context of the song


He got dropped off in Roanoke because the trucker was heading west. The part about Cumberland Gap and Johnson City add to the description of where he was headed. He wasn't saying the trucker was headed from Cumberland Gap west toward Johnson City because they left each other near Roanoke. Roanoke is the reference point and TN is west from there.
