Re: It bums me out that recent grads don't see WVU as a rival...

We used to have great games, although there were times the off-field antics got much of the news.

I remember going to old Mountaineer Field and walking on the brick streets next to the stadium. Such a great atmosphere, looking at the old academic buildings. Did that several times.

The wooden seats were so narrow though, they were a bit uncomfortable. But the real problem was the splinters--still getting them out of my behind.

One time, in the late 70s and an absolutely beautiful fall day, Tech had a nice lead in the first half. Mickey Fitzgerald, who was running fullback, went through the line, clearing everybody, nothing but the goalline ahead of him (was running toward the closed end of the "U"). A WVU defender caught him, and in the process, Mickey blew his knee. We lost him and eventually the game.

Walked out of the stadium mad, and the bricks in the street didn't help--think my foot went between each one. Then on drive home, there was no music to calm me down! The ultimate downer was hearing that UVa had gone to Knoxville and whipped the Vols bad, might have even been a shutout--I don't remember. Could not get home fast enough.

I know people point to the UVa game as THE big one, and it is. But for me, WVU is right up there.
