I listened to a good interview on this yesterday, and while you are
correct, you have to keep in mind people are also finding other ways to watch. Some of the sports I can go straight to the source (MLB for example). The Cable / satellite companies are losing viewers by the masses. Even Thursday night football just went to Amazon.
Also, while you are correct on the shows, HBO can market and show Game of Thrones on DVD, show it on their channel, etc. over and over. Sports are 1 and done. The demand isn't there to watch reruns of a mid season game.
The other was, ESPN spends millions to develop shows. Now you have podcasts, live streaming, etc, where I can go get opinions.
