It became associated as starting at Marshall after the plane crash of 1970 due to the movie "We Are Marshall," but knowing a good bit about the history of the event, I know they added a lot of elements to the movie that weren't 100% accurate. In reality the chant did not start until some years later. I've always heard Penn St. was the origin of the chant, but not sure of the exact time frame.
