Suggest installing AdBlock Plus and NoFlash extensions. They stop the problems you mentioned. I agree the Roanoke site is still a pain in the rear with the digital subscription push (hence need to open any of their articles in a private browsing window or block cookies). Richmond is now about as bad since they started the same. I try to avoid both in favor of Daily Press and Washington Post, since they are much less ad/popup intrusive.
