Only problem is that Notre Dame will never join a conference as long as they have a path to the championship. But if they want to play that game and think that the only worthwhile end to a season is a national championship trophy then they will be disappointed 99.9% of the time.

Having the first round at the higher seeds makes a bit easier on the fans.
