Re: Going back a ways - Bill Dooley

I was a grad student 79-81 and remember Dooley basically getting fired at UNC and coming to VT. His first step was to replace the playing field grass at a cost of $100K or so with Bermuda grass which of course died in late Sept and the field had to be painted green. Of course he did not consult with our fine Agronomy Dept across the road from Lane Stadium. Bill Brill liked Bill Dooley because the offense ran so much the games were over sooner than most. Dooley played a weak schedule with teams like VMI, W&M, Kent State, etc. and would eek out a barely winning schedule most years. His final year bowl win against NC State was his highlight. I can't speak to the NCAA trouble.
