Why I don't attend games

I was a long time attendee, going to games to support the team even during the 2-9 seasons of the late 1980s. I enjoyed the people who sat around me and looked forward to going to Lane. Then, in the drive to raise more money they kept re-seating the stadium, I kept upping my donation to the Hokie Club and still always ended up with worse seats. I didn't really mind having seats that did not have a good view of the field, but i did care about being surrounded by drunken a**holes yelling profanities when there were little kids around, or people telling me to sit down when I was trying to yell and encourage the defense to step up. This was compounded by the fact that the game day experience became less enjoyable as more and more rules were imposed. I finally decided that I can enjoy the games more sitting at home with friends watching on TV. I still strongly support the team and donate to the program, I just won't go to Lane anymore. Some will say I am not a "true fan" because I don't attend in person, but I do still support the team both in spirit and with dollars. I have many friends who have made the same decision as I have, and most of us were the fans who went to the games and supported the team even during the dark days of the early Beamer era when there were sometimes only 15-20 thousand fans in the stadium. I hope that Bill Lansden and his staff will think about this the next time they decide to re-seat Lane and raise the ante for seat selection.
