Willingham's success was more from the defensive side of the ball.
He installed a new offense, but it was putrid. The defense was senior-laden with a lot of players that were recruited by Bob Davie. Say what you will about Davie's coaching acumen and game planning (and I could say a lot), but he at least recruited physical defensive players that usually played solid defense.
Weis's new offensive system worked immediately with the seniors on the roster recruited in Willingham's only decent recruiting class (the rest were some of the worst I've ever seen). Unfortunately, Weis just didn't have a clue as to how to teach his own recruits how to play their positions, or recruit players who fit well together as a team.
