Why we wear what we wear

If I'm out for a leisure ride and not to exercise then any shorts will do, but if I'm out there to push my limit and get the heart rate up, I need the proper gear. 30-40 miles in 90° heat without proper shorts and I don't even want to imagine the chafing and pain that would be soon to follow.

I usually don't wear a specific "biking" shirt but rather a cheap lycra compression shirt. It wicks the sweat and keeps you cool. Any other type of shirt will be soaking wet in a matter of seconds. The colorful biking shirts do have pockets on the back where you can carry items like food etc. for longer rides.
