That actually unironically encapsulates the problem
Most of the money associated with VT graduates is in the D.C. metro area, one of the most expensive places to live in the country. Even discretionary purchases can be pretty steep. The thorn in everyone's side is that the entertainment value of the product on the field has gone way down for most people (even for diehard fans it's probably not as much fun to watch 7-6 as it is to watch 11-2). So, the question then becomes, with how much money you're willing to spend on entertainment, would you rather spend it on 6 or 7 weekends in Blacksburg during football season, or would you rather get a lot more weekends of drinking and chasing tail and not having to drive 3-4 hours each way? Luckily having a new coach makes things more interesting, but I can personally say that I've been going to games for the last 11 years, but the last few years, when I know VT has maybe a 50/50 shot of beating a lackluster opponent on a dreary noon kickoff, going to the game feels more like a chore than fun. If I had less money, selling my tickets and watching the games on TV would've been one of the first things I did to cut back on spending.
