A look at the Wooden Legacy teams' RPI

Next November (Nov 24, 25, and 27), the Hokies will participate in the DirecTV Wooden Legacy tournament in the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Here's a look at the RPI effects of that tournament.

First of all, to my knowledge, ALL games are played in CA, so it's a true neutral-site event (good for the RPI). There were no beater teams at home, like the Emerald Coast Classic this year, where VT started with two bad teams at home (bad for the RPI).

Here are the teams that will participate, and their RPI ratings (as of March 22, 2016), according to RPIRatings.com:

Cal State Northridge: 281
Dayton: 25
Nebraska: 162
New Mexico: 138
Portland: 250
Texas A&M: 17
UCLA: 104
Virginia Tech: 81

Of course, there's no guarantee that any of those teams will finish next year in the RPI anywhere near where they finished this year.

Having said that, going by this year's RPI, that's:

2 Top-50 teams: Dayton (25) and Texas A&M (17)
0 Teams between 50-100 (VT can't play themselves)
3 Teams between 100-200: UCLA (104), New Mexico (138), Nebraska (162)
2 Teams 200-300: Portland (250), Cal State Northridge (281)

Without doing any research on the teams involved -- who they're returning, prospects for next year, etc. -- it's good that there are no 300+ teams in the bracket, and only two 200+ teams. Should be a solid event for VT's RPI ... not great, but not an RPI killer like the six 300+ teams the Hokies played at home this year: Jacksonville State (309), Ark-Pine Bluff (310), VMI (317), Lamar (338), NC A&T (340), and Grambling State (350).

It's good to have Dayton in the event. They're typically a good-but-not-great team, but more importantly, they're in the Atlantic-10, a conference that finished 7th in the RPI this year, and a conference full of teams that know how to game the RPI.
