I have to disagree with the general premise. This is not unlike the salesperson that loses a deal because he doesn't make a sales call because he is certain the person won't buy. That guarantees the outcome.

Now, I understand limited resources, etc. BUT if you only go for the easier opportunities, you will slowly degrade your talent pool because you are shying away from competition.
