I know it mentioned the losing season at the begging of the article


It just seemed to be dismissive of it (or at least that is how I interpreted it) since it was only mentioned 1 time. The author wanted to focus on the protest and seems to want the reader to conclude that the protest is the primary (sole?) cause for the drop in contribution (at least that is how I interpreted it).
