My experience around Europe is the big cities have a fair number of English speakers but generally you can get by with some sign language and 20 key words. Most people will be very patient with you if you make an initial effort. The main thing is always be courteous and don't get upset when you don't get exactly what you want.

Living in Europe is much harder than visiting but it's a great experience.
