Should not even be a crime per se...
shooting a firearm in a home could simply be an accident. If you keep a loaded Glock (no safety - YOU are the safety) for home security, and you sneeze, trip, fart, or step on a tack while carrying the firearm, you could possibly pull the trigger. It's a home accident, not a crime.
Sure it's a deadly weapon and you should have a heightened sense of care, but if you accidentally leave the stove on and kill everybody in a house fire, we don't talk about felonies. If you put a ladder on soft ground and fall and break your neck, probably not a felony. These kinds of things kill far more people.
BTW I never understood the 'cleaning my weapon' excuse. It seems like that is the least likely time to shoot yourself. I understand a dry fire after cleaning, but don't you think you'd notice a round in the chamber during cleaning? SMH.
