This wasn't some rookie mistake by an inexperienced coach.
The raises to the former Memphis coaches show who Fuente most values as a part of his staff. You may think Gray was indispensable but Fuente clearly did not. If Gray was as valued by Fuente as he is on this board, Gray would have been the highest paid non-coordinator. I think it's pretty safe to say Fuente knew this was a risk when he made those salary decisions and wasn't particularly concerned about Gray leaving.
It remains to be seen whether Fuente should have valued Gray more.
