DB's aren't in the front 7, but to answer your question

In my opinion only, I just feel that nearly any program outside of maybe 9 or 10 in America with incredible traditions (OU, Bama, LSU, USC) etc, that play nearly 500 ball, their recruiting is by in large going to take hit compared to where they were if they were consistently winning 10+ games per year. Sure, we still get some solid players all over the field to include DB, but as a whole, we have fallen off a touch on both sides of the ball if.........if we consider the amount of 4 and 5 star Virginia Talent on Defense we missed on the passed few years compared to around 2005 when we did not miss nearly as much as the present.

Also, in my opinion only, the offense was clearly missing recruits after the Tyrod commit compared to where we were around 2002-3. I don't think VT missing on a defensive recruit is DIRECTLY due to our offensive culture. I think it's simply due to our overall status as a program measured of course by our record of just above 500 ball the past few years, but........I think the reason we are at the point of just above 500 ball the past few years is due to the offensive culture being tainted and this did directly effect offensive recruits in the living room.
