The magic number is whether VT plays 34 games this year...

and Clarke doesn't play the rest of the year.

Here's the official criteria:

To gain a medical redshirt, the athlete cannot compete in more than 30 percent of her team’s games within a season, not counting contests officially designated as scrimmages or exhibition games. When such computations are made, fractions are rounded up. For example, if a team plays 27 games, the exact 30 percent mark is 8.1. For the purposes of medical redshirt eligibility, therefore, the player may compete in nine games and still be eligible for a medical redshirt.

So for Clarke, he would have to not play at all the rest of the season which would have him finish playing in 11 games. The lowest amount of team games that would round up to 11 player games is 34 (exactly 30% of 34 games is 10.2 which would round up to 11 games per the rules noted above).

We have 31 regular season games scheduled and would have one automatic ACC conference tournament game so we need to extend our season by 2 games to get to 34...either by winning 2 ACC tournament games or some combination of that and NCAA/NIT tournament games.

A few weeks ago I would have said none of those scenarios would have been possible but with the team's play in conference, it's possible we could win an ACC tournament game and possibly make it to the NIT.

But all of this may not be applicable if Clarke is able to come back in mid-Feb and Buzz decides it's worth playing him down the stretch.
