In 2014, taking the top 50 NFL prospects, 6 were five star prospects, 20 were four star prospects. 17 were 3 star prospects. Only 6 were 1 or 2 star prospects.
So there were a greater number of 4 star prospects than 3 star prospects, despite the fact that there are FAR fewer 4 star prospects. Per Rivals, in the 2010 class, there were 27 five star prospects. There were 395 four star prospects. There were 1,644 three star prospects.
Yes, there is a significant difference between a four star prospect and a three star prospect. Especially given that the four star label isn't given out as freely as it was 5-6 years ago.
