I believe that highly rated recruiting classes are over rated.
It is a chicken and egg thing. If a recruit gets an offer from Bama or another name brand school the rating goes up.
Not all highly rated players succeed. For example, what about the RB from VA who is transferring from Michigan.
Some players also have character issues. Gamecocks recruited a highly rated DE. He spent the second semester of his HS senior year in jail for felony charges, which were eventually dismissed. He got busted for possession and suspended. Then he got shot outside a nightclub.
I believe in second chances and that is why there are places such as East Mississippi JC. For ever Chad Kelley success story, however, there are probably a dozen failures.
PS: Ohio State on paper had a lot of highly rated players, 3 top QB's, a Heisman candidate rb, and an outstanding defensive player.
They lost to Michigan State who got blasted by Bama.
