Those that remember the rise of VT football understand it coincided with the rise of ESPN providing prime time coverage of teams that had never been seen outside the local market at the same time the NCAA was cracking down on the SWC, the SEC and a chunk of the power teams. The teams that had all the talent were being punished and kids saw us on national tv being pumped up by the ESPN hype machine.

Interestingly enough, the list of those that are now the only ones with a chance every year, are pretty much the same teams that were on that list in the old days.
