When sports leadership (league leaders, sports media, financial backers, etc) not only accommodates, but actively encourages, the gradual destruction of sports as an institution in multiple ways, it’s not at all surprising it gets exactly that.

Unless the powers-that-be start re-focusing on the fundamental reasons why people enjoy sports, it will only get worse. And it may be that the tipping point has been crossed. For different reasons, sports lost young people years ago and they’re now losing older fans in droves - at a time when they have a captive audience and should be showing ratings gains. And the bond may now be broken and those folks are gone forever.
