Ill break that down into 2 parts...

1) why VT (or just Bede) was hesitant to hit the roll man

I think a lot of it had to do with how many deflections Louisville had early on from post entry and dump-downs. When you see a team continually get their hands in the passing lanes, it makes you think twice about trying to make similar passes. Its why I subscribe to the defensive philosophy of playing in the passing lanes, and being more aggressive on ball screens, because you can defend certain actions before they even happen if you do the work early and get some deflections.

I knew VT was going to have a hard time yesterday once that stretch of deflections and turnovers happened entering the ball into the post.

2) Bede throwing back to the reversal rather than hitting the roll

I know there were at least 2 instances where this was designed. Particularly they like to run Bede off a ball screen TOWARDS the sideline, and follow it up with a screen in for a shooter and Bede hits the shooter hopefully for an open look. Louisville had obviously scouted this tendency so it made it look like Bede wasnt looking for anything except an outlet.

To put those 2 ideas together:

Id much rather Bede hit the reversal quickly if he isnt confident to fit the ball in tight spaces for post entry and/or off the roll. You have to move the defense quickly one way or another and if you cant advance the ball closer to the rim (or to an open area) then you need to quickly get the ball out of your hands.
