I remember CC once saying that
not all four-stars are created equal. Like, some 4-stars are close to being 5-star caliber players and many other 4-stars are not really all that distinguishable from 3-stars.
It would be great if we could get a few of those high 4-star players. But otherwise, I think our plan is to find guys who are a great culture fit, great scheme fit, are hard workers, and who can develop their strength and size over 1-2 years and basically be 4-star talents. It seems like a wiser strategy than trying to consistently win recruiting battles against UGA, Clemson, Ohio State, Penn State, Bama, etc.
I like the plan. It requires (1) a reliable and valid process for evaluating talent and potential, (2) great player development, and (3) the ability to retain players. This new portal rule is going to make #3 more challenging. The evidence for #2 has been mixed at VT. Hopefully the new dining hall will help with that.
We'll see. :)
