I like being multiple in how you defend screens...


I think you should have different calls for ball screens based on your scout.

For instance, if a ball handler is a non-shooter then go under. If the roll man is an athletic freak they throw lobs to then push up and go under. If the ball handler is a shooter then you hedge and go between. If they have only one offensive player then you trap every time he gets a ball screen.

Those would be simple communication calls

"Fire" for trap
"Hedge" for hedge and go between
"Under" for go under
"Blake" for push up (its how teams used to defend Blake Griffin with the Clippers)

It requires your players to know the scout better and communicate, but it raises your ceiling defensively because you can take away a lot more gameplans. Playing that way defensively is essentially what MY does offensively. Its complicated, but well worth teaching.

Maybe they dont want to make it too complicated (and I completely understand that) but maybe theres a happy medium? Im concerned teams are going to learn you need to simply wait half a beat longer to drive when the post defender is in purgatory trying to defend both the ball and get back to his matchup
