*trying* to look at it objectively, both camps have a good point.

I’m on the side that says Fu has done too much damage to stay. He’s lost a huge majority of the fan base and the players (regardless of what the PR tweets say). Former players have lashed out. Pros have commented negatively. The aura of VT cannot continue with another year of Fu. Recruiting is getting worse and worse, and the gap between us and UNC (to teams previously on the same level) has widened to where we’re not even close.

On the other hand, we’re not a rich program. Some other head coach available for hire isn’t bringing in a plethora of 4 stars and a 5 star here and there. We’re just not a very attractive program to high school players (at least those of legitimate talent). So we have to rely on diamonds in the rough. We’ve always appreciated a good diamond in the rough, but when all 15 players in a class are labeled as such, the law of averages says it’s not going to end well. So that’s not necessarily a Fu thing, it’s a funding and staffing thing. It’s a donating thing. We wouldn’t be doing ourselves any favors by hitting the reset button again and taking two steps back to potentially be here again, a fringe 7 win team fighting for a .500 record every year. Why reset and take that gamble when we could keep certain coaches (Fu, JHam, Vice, DT, AL) and try to continue to build on a foundation, if (and that’s a big IF) we don’t backslide even more? We could use the money not used in a buyout for a better OC and skill position coaches, a better recruiting department, maybe a PR team, etc.

Both camps aren’t wrong necessarily, but they’re probably equally as right.
