It's pretty common knowledge that Frank was required to make changes
following the 2-8-1 season or he was in jeopardy of losing his job.

That's a quote from Dave Braine in the linked article below. That and other articles like it is probably the best "hard evidence" anyone will ever get. I can say as someone who grew up in Blacksburg and was/is friends with many of the families involved, including those who lost their jobs, that it was a put up or shut up moment for Coach Beamer.
