Musings about the state of the program, Fuente etc.

First some facts. HOF Coach Beamer's record in last four years was (not including bowls) 26-22. Fu's record for the first 4 years was 32-16. Including this year his reg season record is 36-20. However, he is 18-14 in the last 32 games. This shows the early improvement has slowed. It can be argued that we are about where we were when he arrived. The difference is we generally score well on offense and the defense is poor. Almost a total turn around from where we were four years ago. Please remember 0-0 at Wake as an example.

Fu appears to be a good man, husband and father. A solid coach who will have a long career in this business. The players graduate at a high rate and we have had nary a hint of institutional scandal under his reign.

Imho, Fu has two major problems. #1 is his very low key personality. To the media and in large group settings he comes off as a bit haughty, rather humorless, and just not warm and fuzzy. His approach to not letting fans get to watch any practices and scrimmages (including media), his limited access on social media, no access to asst. coaches and according to some, his way of treating the old guard ex Hokie players, has done him no favors at all. The Head Coach is a CEO of a large brand and he has alienated many people. I am not sure this is something he can turn a switch and change. And it would not be an issue if he was winning big.

Fu's second problem is the the fall off in recruiting. This is not all his fault. He inherited facilities that were falling behind peer instituations as they forged ahead in the arms race of today. Tech is just now realizing this and getting more support his way. Is it too late? I am dissapointed in how we have lost our recruiting edge in Va. There are still plenty of good players in Va. but they are going out of state in droves. Is this the personality thing again? Loss of Cavenaugh, Hite and some others? Definitly some relationships have soured and it's costing us.

Frankly, we are a bit spoiled. We want to be among the top 20 in college football without coming up with the financial support to support it. We still have not gotten the Drive for 25 completed. You think Clemson, Michigan, or any others that we want to compete with would take this long to accomplish a fund raising event? I don't like the reseating process any more that anybody else, but to be honest, how else can the athletic department get the average fan to pony up some extra dough to help us at least stay on an even plane with the competition? My thinking, and I will be attacked for it, is from the Field of Dreams-build it and the players and success will come. A lot of our fans feel like we have to give them 9-10 wins FIRST and then we will support the team. In 2020 that's just not the way it works folks. Wish it was.

My final thought is because of the financial pressures from Covid on the entire athletic dept. (Whit has already told TSL that we are looking at about a 40 million shorfall that is only eased by a few large donors helping out), the buy out money on Fu's contract, and the fact that we had no spring to install the new defense, and sharpen up tecniques in our passing game and tackling, along with the lack of weight training in the summer and an extremly messed up fall camp, that Fu will be here in 2021 without question. He will be on a very hot seat next year and will need 8+ wins in 2021 to get off that seat. A tanking in the Pitt and UVA. games may change the thinking though.

In the meantime let's support our players. GO HOKIES!
