Laziness on D (rant ahead)

There are things that can't be coached or taught such as speed and natural ability. There are things that can be coached and taught such as discipline and work ethic. I saw neither by the Virginia Tech defense this weekend.

We were all witness on Saturday to athletes giving up on plays, hands on hips and flat feet during key drives, poor body language, and no talking between plays. On several occasions, we witnessed one or 2 guys trying to make a tackle while the rest of their teammates on the field watched idly.

We witnessed terrible assignment football. No one performed their contain responsibilities at DE. DBs played out of their zones and covered the wrong receiver in man situations. LBs were out of position on practically every play.

Many Hokie fans say the problem is recruiting and to some degree it is. However the most impending problem with the defense is fundamentals and attitude. A Power 5 program was run up and down the field by a mid major with less money, inferior facilities and players that were not recruited by Power 5 conferences.

The responsibility lies with the coaching staff. Playing with pride and heart has nothing to do with donors, facilities or recruiting. It's a lack of leadership. I'd rather watch a bunch of one stars working their asses off than what I witnessed today.
