unless there is some miracle turnaround. The rule of thumb has usually been the next-to-last year of a coach’s contract is when you make the decision to fire him and buy him out or offer him an extension. You never want to leave a coach hanging because of the effect on recruiting. In fact, I can’t remember ever seeing it happen where a university just let a coach play out his last year and not give him a new contract. So there will be a buyout at some point.
