2004 - Lost a game they should have won to NC State who finished 5-6. Miami, FSU, and BC finished 9-3 and UVA finished 8-4 all ranked in top25. Tech did not play FSU that year. Tech lost the BCS bowl to Auburn.
2007 - Tech was demolished by LSU 48-7 Then tech proceeded to lose to BC 10-7 on a Thursday night on a hail mary. Lost to Kansas in a BCS bowl and three ACC teams finished in the rankings, Tech, BC at 11-3 and Clemson at 9-4.
2008 - Tech opened the season losing to ECU, man that one sucked. Followed by losses to BC and FSU who was ranked 24 at the time. Then a loss to unranked Miami. But hey they managed a BCS win against Cincinnati who was basically one year out of Conference USA. Any other team from a power 5 probably would have beat tech in the BCS bowl
that year. VT, FSU, and GT finished ranked in the ACC.
2010- Open w a loss to Boise State in typical Tech fashion at last minute. Then lose to JMU
which was the worst then lose another BCS bowl to Stanford. Tech beat 23 ranked NC state this year, 24th ranked Miami, and 20th ranked FSU. Tech FSU and NC state finished in the top 25 that year.

It all seems pretty mediocre to me. I've loved the product, attending games, including away games etc. But I live in reality 99 was the best year and Tech almost had the NC but Peter Warrick was just too much to handle. Sure tech led the country in a lot of defensive and special team stats, and plenty of Hokies went pro. There were memorable games, plays, etc. But at the end of the day Tech doesn't win the big games, and the best seasons outside of 99 there wasn't much competition from within the conference.

Edit to add* I think the overall record vs top 5 teams is 1-31(might be wrong) and the over record to ranked is 56-94, and a 13-20 bowl record......again just reality.
