Whatever happened to the chain gangs?


I don’t think I’ve seen a measurement once this year.
I have a theory: refs are now marking the ball so that the front end of the ball is just touching the yard line. Ex. Right at the 30 yard line. Makes it a lot easier to determine first downs. Has there been a change in the rules or referee guidelines that would allow this?
Any other explanations?
