Perhaps because they would have a longer term view than you?

There's only two ways this whole college football thing is going to work out:

A - the ACC, Big12, and SEC move forward and have a successful fall season with no complications due to the virus. This will put tremendous pressure on the Big10 to play their season in the spring and I expect they will make every effort to do so.

B - despite their best intentions, the three leagues fold in the next 30 days and nobody plays football until fall 2021.

What do I want to see? Option A - I get to watch cfb in the fall and again in the spring - couldn't ask for more given the fact that we aren't going to have a "true" cfb season anyways (no PSU-VT and other inter-conference match-ups, no fans, no tailgates, no bands, no cheerleaders, no playoffs, etc). I will watch on TV, but it will be a watered down version.

What do I think will happen? Option B. Unfortunately, the media and public mass hysteria is already beginning to take place within the public school systems and universities. Grandiose plans to reopen, but sheer panic at the reality that the INEVITABLE would happen (positive case counts would increase)! It is the height of stupidity of those decision makers to think they would have thousands of 18-22 years olds return to their campus and behave in any manner other than the normal way that 18-22 years will behave. Did they really think there wouldn't be any gatherings, parties etc? Did they really think they could bring all these kids back and not have an increase in positive case numbers? Yet, their sudden reaction to shut everything down again and send people home is as though it never occurred to them what would happen.

Sadly, I predict by the end of September that almost all universities and public school systems in this country will have reversed their efforts towards any in person teaching and everybody will be back home and virtual.

So, whether its Option A or Option B, all universities will be in the same boat by fall 2021 - either everybody will be playing or nobody will be playing. This current situation with the 2 sitting out and 3 playing is at most a 1 year anomaly and wont be repeated next year. Thus, no reasonable impact to kid who will be a freshman in 2021 or 2022.
