Masks are more for preventing you from spreading if you're asymptotic
An unfiltered mask provides some protection to the virus, but not much. It's more to minimize droplets from yourself, in case you're infectious but don't have any symptoms. So "willing to take the risk" is basically taking the risk of infecting others, not the risk of protecting yourself.
