All is lost. Maybe. Maybe not!

Couple of stories I have always liked:

1. In 1936 to make the U.S. Olympic team, track & field athletes went through regionals first. Howard K. Smith, well-known to my generation as an ABC News nightly anchor, ran hurdles in his region's competition (down in Louisiana I think) and lost in the first heat to another guy by the length of the bill on his hat (as I recall). He figured if he didn't win in such an early race in the process, he'd take his spikes and go home so he did. The fellow who beat him - was the eventual Olympic champion and world record breaker that year, Forest Towns.

2. Adrian Zmed, known to us for his role with William Shatner in TJ Hooker, entered some sort of singing/rock competition (details I'm not clear on) in the Chicago area and after coming in 2nd place decided that a singing/rock n roll career might not be that attainable, so he went into acting. The group that beat him out for 1st place, Styx.

I might have got those from Paul Harvey.

Anyway, I have no clear idea how this relates to Virginia Tech football, but my poor translation is: We might as well take the hint and give up. Let's concentrate on Bass Fishing. That's where we belong.

Let's have fun. Go Hokies!
