i was a lowly baseball manager, scorekeeper, and “unofficial” team cheer-
leader on practice days. i felt so much a part of the team and the successes we had (ie 3 time district champs, 2 time district tourney champs, 3 time regional tourney participants, 2 time regional winners, and once 3rd place in Virginia).
i never deluded myself that i was anywhere close to being player quality. but i found immense satisfaction in knowing i did my part the best that i could for 5 seasons and preseason workouts.
it helped prepare me for success in architecture as a team member, lead project designer, and many other ways. plus i got to take what i learned from watching a good coach improve players into life and game winners, and use it to coach little league(son) and Upward basketball, and girls softball (2 daughters).
i don’t think i’d change my “position” or experience, except for Warwick to have won one state championship. my “teammates” worked hard enough to deserve one.
i would advise him to do whatever he chooses to do with enthusiasm, intensity, and to follow his coaches direction with all his heart. he will succeed.
