Hate to differ
First, I teach med students, so I do have some insight here. It is absolutely untrue that med schools "weed out" students - it's actually quite the opposite. Once they're in, med schools bend over backwards to keep them in, to prevent attrition and keep high "retention rates". This is a stat that med schools are proud of, especially when it concerns students from diverse backgrounds (first time college, ethnicity, etc). Med schools will also remediate students, allowing those who are struggling to retake semesters or courses.
And it all depends on how you define intelligence - MDs are brighter than the average citizen, sure they did well in college and on standardized tests (MCAT) and then were able to cram a bunch of information into their heads during med school. But it's a stretch to say they're smarter than competent engineers, or architects, or businessmen/women. Especially creative or critical thinking, those are not necessarily strengths of all MDs.
