My Take: He is neither a 4, nor a 3.
He knows he has no professional future as a 4. He believes that if he is "forced" to play wing, he will "learn" how to do it. Unfortunately I believe the thing that is holding him back is his skill set, not lack of experience. Specifically his lack of explosiveness and dribbling aptitude.
Nothing stopped him from working on these deficiencies here. The folly is that he thinks a change of scenery will change his work ethic or natural abilities and limitations.
Hope it works out for him. I believe we are better off without him.
