I live in Tennessee. A state with 6.7M residents.
We’ve had 40 deaths from COVID-19. Our entire economy has shut down. There were 1100 deaths last year from auto accidents. We didn’t ban automobiles.
There has been a panic about hospital beds, ventilators, healthcare professionals. There will be a massive shortage, we were told. We have like 12 people in ICU in all of NASHVILLE because of COVID-19.
Is it possible that completely shutting down entire aspects of the economy and putty millions out of work maybe was a slight over reaction?
Other than my students from Vandy, I don’t know a single person who has tested positive. Neither does anyone in my social group. And yet, everything is shut down.
I would argue this total shut down has been built upon predictions that were wildly inaccurate. What if the predictive models were better and we had a better understanding of what the real impact would be? Perhaps the response would be different. Maybe we don’t need to treat the whole damn country like NY — since the whole damn country isn’t experiencing what NY is. Just a thought.
