If our university and athletic department cared as much about sports as our fans do, we’d have several Nattys (in Olympic sports at least) by now. We can all blame it on the conference arms race, blame it on competitive money issues, the geographic location of Tech, etc, etc. But it all boils down to the fact that the university only commits enough to athletics to make us competitive and respectable at times, but never enough to win a Natty. You have to ask yourself, how do JMU and ODU have Nattys and Tech doesn’t. How is it that GMU and VCU has had just as much success in revenue sports (referencing their final 4 appearances) as Tech (with our one Natty run in 99 football). Tech should be light years ahead of JMU, VCU, GMU and ODU, but we’re not. And until Tech starts playing sports like a big boy and not some above average mid major university, we’ll have to deal with frustrated fans. Tech fans crave it, but the university does nothing about it.

Lastly, I used to get fed up with Tech choking during big moments. Now I simply laugh. It’s 90% predictable that we’ll fail in any big moment or on a big stage. Every now and then we’ll find a nut, but Tech sports are misery. I fully expected Tech to tank game 3 versus UVa in softball last weekend after the fans got excited about 2 shutouts back to back. So I was shocked we pulled that one off.

I’ve been a rabid Tech fan for close to 30 years, but as of last year when Buzz left, football was less than stellar, wrestling punked on a big stage and LAX proves to be just above average (just to name some); I’ve just lost interest in Tech sports. I’ll still watch and follow, but I’m not losing weekends or family time over this underachieving school. Maybe my lack of enthusiasm will be Tech’s good luck charm. Who knows?
