I suspect the schools decided to do it to help reduce their costs
which is why I asked why don't they do it for football, basketball, and volleyball too. For example, the average roster size in baseball is 35 players. However, DI schools can only offer a max of 11.7 scholarships (33.43%). Right now, DI-FBS cap on roster size is 105 players (85 scholarships and 20 walk-ons). Just image how the dynamics of DI-FBS football would change if schools could have a roster size of 105 players, but only be able to offer 35.1 scholarships.
