It's also not just about VT. The college football landscape has shifted
dramatically since 1999. Money seems to matter so much more than it used to and the disparity between schools in terms of that money seems to be growing. We could have done more to capitalize on the 1999 season but I'm still not sure we'd have the money to compete these days. Our fanbase just doesn't seem to be as willing to open their wallets as others (in terms of football of course).
Whether we're "fine" or not seems to hinge upon what your expectations and realistic goals are. I personally don't think we're anywhere near being able to compete for a NC but others seem to hold that up as an attainable goal. If that's your goal then sure we're not "fine" but I question whether we'll ever be. If you're goal is win the Coastal and make it to the ACC CG then we're obviously much closer to doing that. Some people will say that's "settling" or lowering expectations but for me personally that's just being realistic. Maybe if we get back to competing for the ACC every season then we can start looking towards the playoffs and such... but right now that's a pipe dream.
