Greenville metro (900K+) is about 3X the size of Roanoke's MSA.

Roanoke has a larger "city" population but gets thin from there. Roanoke and NRV MSA if combined would be close to 500k. Blacksburg is 2:45 from Charlotte and closer to the Triad (Greensboro/WS/HP). Virginia, NOVA in particular doesn't have strong Va roots so they don't have the state pride you see in SC. Then throw in being so far from Blacksburg it's easy to be a fair-weather fan.
