Why did Bud take so long to retire in the runup to the season?

Were there negotiations going on? I had assumed Bud wanted more than we were willing to pay or that he didn't want to commit to something in exchange for more money (say increased recruiting interest for $$$).

Once it became clear both sides would never meet, then it becomes about who fired who.

By waiting this long to announce, BF really screwed JF over by jeopardizing recruiting (great small class to do it however), hurting the new coach search process, etc. I could see where JF would want to pummel him a bit. Love BF but I think i can see how this situation is his fault, although I admittedly have no inside information.

Your side of the argument just makes me wonder if JF can take having strong people on his team.

If u believe Bud had the leverage, deal couldn't be made argument, then this whole DC spot was the best of a bad situation, although admittedly JF, BF, and the team dug themselves out of what could have been a horrific problem. I believe they had options, just a belief in the Hokie coaching tree sprouting. Sold me, though I am easily sold.
